After this the Romans, laying in a further supply of provisions, repairing the captured ships, and bestowing on their men the attention which their success deserved, put to sea and sailed towards <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Libya&groupId=686&placeId=427">Libya</a>,
reaching the shore with their advanced ships under the promontory known as the Hermaeum which lies in front of the whole Gulf of <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Carthage&groupId=441&placeId=820">Carthage</a> and stretches out to sea in the direction of <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Sicily&groupId=973&placeId=1724">Sicily</a>. Having waited there until their other ships came up, and having united their whole fleet, they sailed along the coast till they reached the city of <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Aspis&groupId=374&placeId=706">Aspis</a>.
Landing there and beaching their ships, which they surrounded with a trench and palisade, they set themselves to lay siege to the town, the garrison of which refused to surrender voluntarily.
Those Carthaginians who made good their escape from the naval battle sailed home, and being convinced that the enemy, elated by their recent success, would at once attack <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Carthage&groupId=441&placeId=820">Carthage</a> itself from the sea, kept watch at different points over the approaches to the city with their land and sea forces.
But when they learnt that the Romans had safely landed and were laying siege to <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Aspis&groupId=374&placeId=706">Aspis</a>, they abandoned the measures taken to guard against an attack from the sea, and uniting their forces devoted themselves to the protection of the capital and its environs. The Romans, after making themselves masters of <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Aspis&groupId=374&placeId=706">Aspis</a>, where they left a garrison to hold the town and district,
sent a mission to <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Rome&groupId=935&placeId=1669">Rome</a> to report on recent events, and to inquire what they should do in future and how they were to deal with the whole situation. They then hastily advanced with their whole force and set about plundering the country.
As nobody tried to prevent them, they destroyed a number of handsome and luxuriously furnished dwelling-houses, possessed themselves of a quantity of cattle, and captured more than twenty thousand slaves, taking them back to their ships.
Messengers from <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Rome&groupId=935&placeId=1669">Rome</a> now arrived with instructions for one of the Consuls to remain on the spot with an adequate force and for the other to bring the fleet back to <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Rome&groupId=935&placeId=1669">Rome</a>.
Marcus Regulus, therefore, remained, retaining forty ships and a force of fifteen thousand infantry and five hundred horse,
while Lucius, taking with him the ship\'s crews and all the prisoners, passed safely along the coast of <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Sicily&groupId=973&placeId=1724">Sicily</a> and reached <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Rome&groupId=935&placeId=1669">Rome</a>.

<p> Regulus' forces: 15,000 foot and 500 horse represent the bulk of the legionaries and probably the whole of the cavalry originally embarked <milestone unit="page" n="88">[88]</milestone> at Ecnomus (on the horse see Thiel, Hist. 216–17). Probably between 2,000 and 3,000 marines went down in the 24 ships lost at Ecnomus (28. 14); and the original total of soldiers on board was c. 27,600 (i.e. 9,200 permanent garrison from <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Italy&groupId=656&placeId=1199">Italy</a> and c. 18,400 embarked in <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Sicily&groupId=973&placeId=1724">Sicily</a> from the legions there). Since 40 ships remained behind in <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Africa&groupId=300&placeId=294">Africa</a>, the 210 which returned (for the total of 250 see 25. 7–9 n.) would require 8,400 marines and the 40 at Clupea some 1,600, as permanent garrison, i.e. 10,000 in all. This figure, taken from the c. 25,000 which survived Ecnomus, gives almost exactly Regulus' 15,000. Manlius' return is dated to autumn (256) by Zon. viii. 13. He triumphed: 'cos. de Poeneis naualem egit VIII k. . .' (act. tr.). </p>

<p>Regulus in <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Africa&groupId=300&placeId=294">Africa</a>: in contrast to 29, which is written from the Roman point of view, and probably comes from Fabius, chs. 30– 34 seem to follow Philinus almost exclusively, as can be seen from a comparison with Diodorus, from the stress on the Carthaginian point of view, and from the exaltation of Xanthippus, a Greek (like Philinus) in Punic service. Cf. De Sanctis, iii. 1. 226–7; Bung, 111–15 (contra Laqueur, RE, 'Philinus', col. 2186, who argues for contamination of Fabius and Philinus).</p>

Λιβύην</w>:</emph> Zonaras' account of the Roman fleet's returning to Messana after Ecnomus (viii. 12) is not inconsistent with P.; and the Punic peace overtures mentioned by Zonaras, ibid. (cf. Dio, fg. 43. 22; Val. Max. vi. 6. 2) may also be genuine (though the account includes details that are manifestly invented). </p>

<p> <emph rend="bold"><w lang="el-GR">τὴν ἄκραν τὴν Ἑρμαίαν ἐπονομαζομένην</w>:</emph> modern C. Bon (<a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Ras&groupId=32&placeId=153">Ras</a> Adder), which lies north-east of <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Carthage&groupId=441&placeId=820">Carthage</a>; on the identification of the capes in this area see iii. 22. 5 n. (a). </p> <p> <emph rend="bold"><w lang="el-GR">τὴν Ἀσπίδα καλουμένην πόλιν</w>:</emph> <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Aspis&groupId=374&placeId=706">Aspis</a>, the Roman Clupea (though Ptol. Geog. iv. 3. 2 seems to distinguish the two), lay a little south of C. Bon, on the east side of the peninsula, and somewhat north of (modern) Menzel Temine; of. Lehmann-Hartleben, 246. From here the expedition could cut the communications between <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Carthage&groupId=441&placeId=820">Carthage</a> and her rich possessions to the south-east (Frank, CAH, vii. 682–3). </p>
