<p rend="Plain Text">Antiochus and <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Lampsacus&groupId=666&placeId=1218">Lampsacus</a>; negotiations at <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Lysimacheia&groupId=719&placeId=1320">Lysimacheia</a></p> <p rend="Plain Text"> During the winter of 197/6 Antiochus applied pressure to <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Lampsacus&groupId=666&placeId=1218">Lampsacus</a> (cf. 47. 1 n.), where he promised liberty in the future 'cum satis et ipsis et omnibus aliis appareret ab rege impetratam eos libertatem, non per occasionem raptam habere' (Livy, xxxiii. 38. 6). The date is clear; the events of Livy, xxxiii. 38. 1–7 (despite § 1, 'cum hibernasset Ephesi') are prior to Antiochus' campaign of spring 196 (§ 8, initio ueris); they form part of the res Asiae of Ol. 145, 4 = 197/6. It is possible that 49. 1 represents a sentence from the Lampsacene reply, summarized by Livy (xxxiii. 38. 7), 'nihil neque mirari neque suscensere Antiochum debere, si spem libertatis differri non satis aequo animo paterentur'. If that is so, the Lampsacenes are urging that severity may drive them to turn to <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Rome&groupId=935&placeId=1669">Rome</a>. This interpretation gains some support from 52. 1, and by the appeal which <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Lampsacus&groupId=666&placeId=1218">Lampsacus</a> had already sent to <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Rome&groupId=935&placeId=1669">Rome</a> to be included in the treaty with Philip (47. 1 n.). <milestone unit="page" n="620">[620]</milestone> </p>

Oberhummer, RE, 'Sely(m)bria', cols. 1324–7). L. Cornelius (App. Syr. 3 has <w lang="el-GR">Γνάιος</w> incorrectly) is probably L. Cornelius L.f. L.n. Lentulus, consul 199 (cf. Broughton, MRR, i. 339 n. 5), sent on the special errand here mentioned. </p>
