<p rend="Plain Text">The Sixth Syrian War</p> <p rend="Plain Text">This section consists of four passages from the exc. de legat. gent. (19. 1–7, 20. 1–13, 22. 1–3, and 23. 1–5), one from de uirt. et uit. (18) and one from de sent. (21. 1–5); they belong to res Asiae (or Aegypti) for Ol. 152, 3 = 170/69; see p. 27.</p> <p rend="Plain Text">On the opening stages of the Sixth Syrian War see 1. 1–9 n.; the Egyptian army set out for <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Coele-Syria&groupId=484&placeId=908">Coele-Syria</a> in February or early March 169, but Antiochus got in the first blow with a victory in a battle fought between <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Pelusium&groupId=863&placeId=1555">Pelusium</a> and Mt. Casius (Diod. xxx. 14). An armistice was agreed (Diod. xxx. 18. 2), whereupon Eulaeus persuaded Ptolemy VI to flee to <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Samothrace&groupId=945&placeId=1681">Samothrace</a>.</p>

Diod. xxx. 18. 1 (based on P.), <w lang="el-GR">πραγματικὸς καὶ τοῦ προσχήματος τῆς βασιλείας ἂξιος</w>. <emph rend="bold"><w lang="el-GR">πλὴν τῶν κατὰ τὸ Πελούσιον στρατηγημάτων</w>:</emph> cf. Diod. xxx. 18. 1–2, whence it appears that Antiochus seized <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Pelusium&groupId=863&placeId=1555">Pelusium</a> after the truce, having gained Ptolemy's confidence, and with the support of Egyptian officers, won over by his generosity after the battle (Diod. xxx. 14, which should follow Diod. xxx. 16).
