the site of <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Arsinoe&groupId=370&placeId=700">Arsinoe</a> is in doubt, hence also the identity of this river. If <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Arsinoe&groupId=370&placeId=700">Arsinoe</a> (cf. xviii. 10. 9, xxx. 11. 5) is another name for <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Conope&groupId=489&placeId=919">Conope</a> (cf. iv. 64. 3 n.), the Cyathus is the outlet stream from the lake of Anghelokastro (map in Vol. I, p. 542); cf. Leake, NG, i. 154; Woodhouse, 210. Probably both <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Arsinoe&groupId=370&placeId=700">Arsinoe</a> and the Cyathus were mentioned in connexion with the Aetolian attack on <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Acarnania&groupId=270&placeId=527">Acarnania</a> (above, p. 14).

for the probable context see 41. 1–42. 4 n. Xyniae (cf. Livy, xxxii. 13. 14, xxxiii. 3. 8, xxxix. 26. 2; Syll. 546 A) occupied a hill amid marshy ground to the south-east of the Lake of Xyniae, not far to the west of the road south from Thaumaci to <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Lamia&groupId=665&placeId=1217">Lamia</a>; see Sthlin, Hell. Thess. 160 (sketch-map), and pl. ix. The town, lying on the south-west slope down to the lake, below the acropolis, was contained within a strong wall 940 m. in circumference.

for the context see above, p. 14. Phorounna (perhaps Phorynna) is probably what Livy, (xxvi. 25. 8) calls Iamphorynnam, caput arcemque Maedicae. Vuli, RE, 'Iamphorina', col. 690, suggests that it lay near the source of the Nestus in the wide valley of Razlog; Leake, NG, iii. 473, identifies it less probably with Vranja, further west, while to Oberhummer, RE, 'Phorunna', col. 651 (who does not mention Livy) it is 'otherwise unknown'.
