all the crops in <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Italy&groupId=656&placeId=1199">Italy</a> up to the gates of <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Rome&groupId=935&placeId=1669">Rome</a> having been destroyed by the armies, and no help from abroad having been forthcoming, since all over the world except in <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Egypt&groupId=556&placeId=368">Egypt</a> there were wars in progress and hostile forces in the field.
The scarcity at <a class="linkToPlace" target="_blank" href="/place?placename=Rome&groupId=935&placeId=1669">Rome</a> had reached such a pitch that the Sicilian medimnus cost fifteen drachmae.
But in spite of this distress the Romans did not neglect their military preparations. . ..
