"Brief introductions to and French translations of nineteen texts about prophecy in Josephus' writings are provided under the following headings: the example of Daniel, the gifts of the high priest John Hyrcanus, the personal gift of Josephus, the gifts of the Essenes, the case of the Pharisees, the "false prophets" before the Jewish war, and the prophets of the revolt during the Jewish war. According to Josephus, the prophetic inspiration of the past and of his own time manifested itself through the gift of predicting the future with regard to political or historical matters and without eschatological conniptions". - D.J.H.
