"The study investigates seven onomastic mix-ups in Josephus' War. The problems addressed include the contradictory lists of delegates sent to Josephus War 2:628 versus Life 197, and the fates of Joseph ben Gorion and Eleazar ben Ananias. Despite their similar nature, the various problems cannot all be solved by the dogmatic application of either a textual or a historical approach. In some cases Josephus seems to have erred in his War account (e.g. with regard to the composition of the delegation against him). In others one should lean toward accepting Josephus' text as it is, with the strange similarity in names that results (e.g. the case of Joseph ben Gorion and Gorion ben Joseph, see War 4:159-160/358). Textual oddities, such as the disappearance of Eleazar ben Ananias, must simply be accepted as unsolved problems". - C.R.M.
