| Title: Chairemon: Egyptian Priest and Stoic Philosopher. The Fragments Collected and Translated with Explanatory Notes Type: Book Year: 1987 Abstract: "Chaeremon was a first century C.E. Egyptian "sacred scribe" who was thoroughly steeped in Hellenistic literature and philosophy. He wrote books on Egyptian history, religion, and language which are now lost but from which several fragments have been preserved by later authors (from Josephus to Tzetzes). In this monograph - the first on Chaeremon since Schwyzer's in 1932 - the Greek text of the testimonia and fragments is presented together with an English translation and explanatory notes. This is the most complete collection of both the undisputed and the disputed fragments of Chaeremon's work that has been published so far. These texts give an illuminating insight into Greco-Egyptian syncretism and Alexandrian anti-Semitism, and they also throw light on the cultural milieu in which the first generations of Christianity had to proclaim their message".
