Abstract: "We have become increasingly aware recently that textual evidence of explicitly messianic expectations among Jewish groups are extremely rare prior to the time of Jesus. The lack of evidence for any concrete messianism among the Jewish literate parties - other than the Menahem incident, that is - suggests that interpretation of the sayings and actions of Jesus should not be keyed primarily to comparisons with the activities and leadership of those parties. Messianic movements among the common people would appear to be at least as important for comparative purposes in interpretation of Jesus".
