Wolters has argued for a connection between the appearance of Halley's Comet in 164 B.C. and the origins of the Hanukkah festival during the Maccabean Revolt. H. cites new evidence that a second comet was visible in the sky over the ancient Near East in 163 B.C. It may have been seen as another portent of further success by some of the victorious Judeans. Finally, H. notes that Halley's Comet reappeared over Jerusalem in A.D. 66 (an appearance evidently noted by Josephus) and may have been interpreted by some of the Judean revolutionaries as a sign of expected success in the struggle against Rome". |
