| Title: The Caiaphas' Ossuaries and Joseph Caiaphas Secondary Title: PEQ Volume: 126 Pages: 32-48 Type: Journal Article Year: 1994 Abstract: in NTA 39 (1995): "The "Caiaphas tomb" and its Aramaic ossuary inscriptions [see §§ 36-993; 37-444, 450] seem to fit naturally into the extensive series of such finds from the later Second Temple period in Jerusalem. But the ossuary inscriptions cannot be said straightforwardly to attest an Aramaic name corresponding to Caiaphas. More probably, they attest the similar and perhaps related name Qopha, which is likely also to have been a priestly name. Joseph with the patronymic bar Qohpha in inscriptions 5 and 6 is not clearly identifiable with Joseph surnamed Caiaphas by Josephus. Thus the identity of the persons named in the three q(y/w)p inscriptions remains in doubt, but their name suggests that this is the tomb of a priestly family". - D.J.H.
