| Title: The Jews as Typhonians and Josephus' Strategy of Refutation in Contra Apionem Secondary Title: Josephus' Contra Apionem. Studies in its character and context with a Latin concordance to the portion missing in Greek Pages: 271-309 Type: Book Section Year: 1996 Abstract: Begg, Christopher R. in: OTA 20.2 (1997), 303: "The authors argue that various of the anti-Jewish charges cited by Josephus in Contra Apionem (CA), e.g., the Jews' association with the Hyksos and their ass-worship, ultimately reflect a long-standing Egyptian mythological tradition about the anti-god Seth-Typho. They then turn to a consideration of the rhetorical strategies - many of these illustrative of ones proposed by Aristotle - employed by Josephus in CA to respond to such charges. They conclude that the historian was most likely not aware of the mythological background of the charges he is trying to refute". Keywords: Contra Apionem |
