Title: The Zealots: Investigations into the Jewish Freedom Movement in the Period from Herod I until 70 A.D.
Author: Hengel, Martin
Type: Book
Year: 1989
Abstract: "English translation of Hengel's ThD thesis (Tübingen, 1959, printed in German in 1961 and 1976) in which he argues: (a) that the various anti-Roman insurrectionists active in Palestine in the eighty years prior to AD 70 were all closely related by family ties, one Hezekiah (d. ca. 47 BC) being their ancestor; (b) that the reason for the emergence of anti-Roman sentiments was religious rather than economic; (c) that Jesus' attitude was quite unlike that of the Zealot movement; (d) that as an author biased towards the Romans, Josephus is not always a very reliable source".
