Uses of the Names Jew, Hebrew and Israel in Ancient Jewish and Early Christian Literature Secondary Title: Arbeiten zur Geschichte des antiken Judentums und des Urchristentums (AGJU) 35 Pages: XVII-303 Type: Book Year: 1996 Abstract: "The revision of a doctoral dissertation directed by J. F. A. Sawyer and submitted in 1991 to the University of Newcastle on Tyne, this volume examines the uses of the names "Jew", "Hebrew", and "Israel" in ancient Jewish and early Christian literature. The approach is based on the theory of associative fields, i.e. giving particular attention both to context and to antonyms, synonyms, and words that sound alike or have some kind of conventional association. After a ten-page introduction, it deals with the term "Jew" in the Bible, the Dead Sea scrolls, Philo's writings, Josephus' writings, early Christian literature, and early rabbinic literature, respectively. Then it discusses "Hebrew" in the various sources, and "Israel" in the Bible, the Dead Sea scrolls, Philo's works, early Christian literature, and early rabbinic literature, respectively. Harvey concludes that in these ancient writings the three names were not exactly synonymous". Keywords: History of Terms, language, style |
