| Title: Josephus, Contra Apionem and Historical Inquiry in the Roman Rhetorical Schools Secondary Title: Josephus' Contra Apionem. Studies in its character and context with a Latin concordance to the portion missing in Greek Pages: 229-249 Type: Book Section Year: 1996 Abstract: Begg, Christopher R. in: OTA 20.2 (1997), 303: "The ancient Roman rhetoricians advocated a conception of history writing as a plausible narrative of what happened in the past and developed a range of techniques (e.g., leading questions to put to the available evidence, the crediting or discrediting of witnesses) to assist in the formulation of such a narrative. H.'s essay argues that Josephus' Contra Apionem (CA) reflects both the rhetoricians' understanding of historiography and the use of the techniques advocated by them. This finding suggests that Josephus had studied in the Roman rhetorical schools by the time he wrote CA". Keywords: Contra Apionem |
