Abstract: "According to Nodet, "Judaism" emerged first in the late 3rd century B.C. under Simon the Just and then in the 1st century B.C. under Hillel at Jerusalem from the encounter between an already formed Pentateuch transmitted by the Samaritans and oral and written traditions from Babylon. After explaining the logic and content of Nodet's thesis, the article takes issue with his use of some sources and some aspects of his methodology. This stimulating work raises questions about widely and facilely accepted historical reconstructions that do not agree with Josephus and the rabbinic tradition". - D.J.H.
