Title: The Ruling Class of Judaea. The Origins of the Jewish Revolt against Rome A.D. 66-70
Author: Goodman, Martin
Type: Book
Year: 1987
Abstract: "Goodman, author of State and Society in Roman Galilee, A.D. 132-212 (1983), traces the outbreak of the Jewish revolt against Rome in A.D. 66 to the decision of some factions of the Jewish ruling class to cut ties with Rome and seek power for themselves. After introducing the problem and the conventional solutions to it, he treats the ruling class between A.D. 6 and 66: the new ruling class in A.D. 6, economic and social problems, problems related to religious ideology, and why the ruling class failed. Then he examines the factional struggle within the ruling class: reactions to failure among the ruling class between A.D. 6 and 66, the outbreak of revolt, the independent state between A.D. 67 and 70, and trends in factional politics between A.D. 50 and 70. Finally he considers the aftermath of the revolt (the Roman reaction)".
