Abstract: "The revised picture of 1st-century Palestinian Judaism proposed by M. Smith in 1956 has won a certain degree of acceptance. Neither L. H. Feldman, H. D. Mantel, nor T. Rajak has succeeded in rebutting Smith's argument about Josephus' testimony concerning the Pharisees or about their place in 1st-century Judaism. While making several valid points, D. R. Schwartz [§ 29-388] hat not refuted Smith's hypothesis. Josephus and the NT do not support the view that Pharisaic Judaism comprised "orthodoxy" in the 1st century. Nor do they support the claim that the Pharisee dominated Jewish society in the Judean province. Only by adducing convincing evidence in favor of these positions can one refute Smith". - D.J.H.
