| Title: Jesus and the Politics of His Day Type: Edited Book Year: 1984 Abstract: "This book sets out to examine the theory that Jesus was involved with the movement of armed resistance to Rome known as the Zealots. This theory has in recent years been the subject of renewed interest in view of three factors: concern about the role of Christians in resistance to oppressive political regimes, the excavation of the Zealot stronghold at Masada; and the work of the late S.G.F. Brandon. The essays in this volume are the work of a group of distinguished scholars whose differing approaches permit balanced study and judgement of the theory. They also combine to present a more probable picture of the situation of Jesus, which demanded of himself and his followers that they should witness to another non-political moral and spiritual order, encountering suffering because their aims were inevitably often taken to be political. The book is a scholarly presentation which will commend itself not only to New Testament specialist but also to readers concerned with ""political theology"" in our own day as well as that of Jesus. // J.P.M.
