Absalom appears as a highly capable and physically attractive leader who is at first moderate and seeks reconciliation with David but later is destroyed by his own excessive ambition. Josephus took the opportunity to remove obscurities and inconsistencies in the biblical narrative, and to provide better motivation and suspense". - D.J.H.
"The author continues his series of studies on Josephus' treatment of biblical figures. Josephus "modernizes" the story of Absalom by dramatizing the conflict with David, without making Absalom a stereotyped villain. Josephus regards Absalom's lawlessness and rebellion against established authority as his greatest sin. Josephus tries to remove obscurities and inconsistencies in the biblical narrative. He hellenizes the story by increasing the element of suspense, by emphasizing physical beauty, by pointing to the inevitability with which ne/mesij follows u(/brij". Keywords: Antiquities |
