| Title: The Contribution of Professor Salo W. Baron to the Study of Ancient Jewish History. His Appraisal of Anti-Judaism and Proselytism Secondary Title: AJS Review Volume: 18 Pages: 1-27 Type: Journal Article Year: 1993 Abstract: "Appraising S. Baron 's work in the field of ancient Judaism, F. underlines two important insights in Baron's work and develops and documents them by the results of his own studies. One point is that besides antisemitism, there was a rather wide-spread philo-Judaism among intellectuals; the other is the importance of Jewish proselytism as a main explanation of the demographic growth of the Jewish people. Motives for conversion were, among others, political, the much more favorable status of women in Judaism, but also economic interests. The success of proselytism was the main reason for the three attempts to expel the Jews from Rome; for a later period, it is best documented by the laws of the Theodosian Code". - G.
