Abstract: "Samuel was of particular interest to Josephus. He devoted more space to him than to any other prophet. Whereas the Bible refers to Samuel as prophet only once, Josephus refers to him as prophet or as prophesying on forty-five occasions. Josephus also emphasizes Samuel's quality for Leadership". - M.J. Mulder "After calling attention to Josephus' special interest in prophecy and in Samuel as a prophet the article discusses the portrait of Samuel in rabbinic literature. Next it considers the virtues of Samuel according to Josephus: his birth and early years, leadership, wisdom, courage, temperance, justice, and piety. Then it deals with Josephus' portrait of Samuel as a lesson in political theory, his apologetic concerns, and his "improvements" in the story (clarifications, increased suspense and drama)". - D.J.H.
