| Title: Josephus' Portrait of Manasseh Secondary Title: JSPE Volume: 9 Pages: 3-20 Type: Journal Article Year: 1991 Abstract: "Like the rabbis, Josephus painted an ambivalent picture of Manasseh (see Ant. 10:37-46). Because he was writing for a predominantly non-Jewish audience, Josephus avoided mentioning Manasseh's introduction of pagan idolatry and instead focused on the sins of the Jews. Josephus' addition that Manasseh did not spare the prophets should be seen against the backdrop of his view of the close connection between history and prophecy. In high-lighting Manasseh 's repentance Josephus departed most radically from the portrait in 2 Kings 20-21 and went considerably beyond that in 2 Chronicles 32-33.
