"The characteristics that distinguish Josephus' presentation of Samson - possessed of the cardinal virtues, and with increased erotic, heroic, and dramatic interest and decreased magical and divine interest - are typically Josephan. Josephus was furthering the thesis that story is the biography of great men. He increased Samson's stature by stressing those qualities that would appeal to a Greek audience and that we find in his portraits of other biblical figures: the external qualities of good birth and handsome appearance, and the internal ones of character, namely the cardinal virtues. In dealing with Samson the rabbinic Midrashim are concerned with worlds play, with the divine and the miraculous, and with deflating Samson's heroic stature.
