| Title: Josephus and Modern Scholarship (1937-1980) Pages: XV, 1055 Type: Book Year: 1984 Abstract: "In a major effort devoted to creating a definitive bibliography on the subject of Josephus and his works, Louis H. Feldman has enriched the scholarly world with a book whose supply of information is nearly unlimited. Important in itself, this book also provides an opportunity for reflecting on the problems of the historical bibliographer and his indispensable contribution to the work of the historian. Primary is the question of focus. In the present instance, it was supposed to be Josephus; in fact, it is all of Second Temple History, leaving the reader perplexed. Nor was his confusion lessened as a result of imprecise slotting and interpretation. Too often the reader was left to discern by himself, especially between items of major and minor importance. The importance of Josephus fort the historian is hard to overestimate. In recent years, scholars have learned much from studying his works about political events, theories of revolution, and the actions and reactions of varying social strata in times of war. There has also been a quantitative explosion in the number of books and articles on the subject. The historian of Josephus, his works and his times, is thus highly dependent on the historical bibliographer. That bibliographer, in consequence, must avoid the pitfalls of his craft, the most dangerous of which, perhaps, is that of being himself inundated, as seems to have occurred here, by the masses of his own material".
