| Title: Die "Jüngerkreise" des Täufers Johannes. Eine Studie zu den religionsgeschichtlichen Ursprüngen des Christentums Secondary Title: PaThSt 19 Type: Book Year: 1991 Abstract: "The slightly revised version of a doctoral dissertation directed by J. Ernst and accepted in 1989 by the theological faculty at Paderborn, this investigation of the so-called Baptist-circle formed by John first considers Jesus' possible membership in it and his history-of-religions relation to it. Next it examines the evidence pertaining to the Baptist-circle in the NT and other texts (Josephus, Ant. Iud. 18:116-119; Pseudo-Clementines, heresiological literature). Then it focuses on the various dimensions of the Baptist-circle hypothesis (origin with John, phenomenology, relation to early Christianity). Finally it tests the Baptist-circle hypothesis in the light of various parts of the NT (Q, Mk, Mt, Lk-Acts, Jn). Backhaus concludes that the heuristic value and methodological basis of current Baptist-circle hypotheses are doubtful." Keywords: New Testament / Early Christianity |
