Studia Slavica Upsaliensia 28 Pages: 168 Type: Book Year: 1990 Abstract: "The present work is an investigation of compounds in Old Slavonic and Greek employing as corpus the seven books by Flavius Josephus on the Jewish War in their Greek and Old Slavonic versions. The Old Slavonic translation is characterized by an unusual freedom on the part of the translator. The two introductory chapters are devoted to the issue of Transformational Grammar as the theoretical starting point for the study of compounds and arguments for the syntactic principle of analysis chosen. The subsequent chapters deal with compounds in Old Slavonic, Flavius Josephus and his Bellum Iudaicum, and the compound words in the Old Slavonic Josephus translation, respectively. Two chapters consider the relationship between compounds in the Greek and Old Slavonic material from the aspects of translation in general and their underlying syntactic structures. A separate chapter concerns compounds containing $\epsilon\upsilon$- and $\kappa\alpha\kappa o$-, and sk40 and sk25, respectively. The conclusions drawn from the investigation can be summarized as follows: (1) The freedom of rendering that characterizes the Old Slavonic translation also embraces compounds. (2) The degree of structural agreement as to underlying syntactic structures in the Greek and Old Slavonic compounds is overwhelming. (3) We can successfully employ an analysis of the underlying syntactic structures to describe and compare compounds in two languages related to each other at a considerable distance".
