| Title: Noncanonical Writings and the New Testament Type: Book Year: 1992 Abstract: "E.'s volume aims to provide an orientation to 11 bodies of ancient writings that relate in some way to the NT and its elucidation. Specifically, he devotes a chapter to the following corpora: OT Apocrypha; OT Pseudepigrapha; the Dead Sea Scrolls; OT Versions; Philo and Josephus; the Targums; Rabbinic Literature; NT Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha; Early Church Fathers; Gnostic Writings; and "Other Writings" (under this heading he includes Greco-Roman Authors; the Corpus Hermeticum; Samaritan Writings; and the Magical Papyri). For each corpus E. summarizes the content of its component writings, offers some basic bibliographical indications concerning these, and calls attention to its relevance for our understanding of the NT. In a concluding chapter E. then discusses a number of individual NT passages (e.g., the parables of the talents and the wicked tenants; 1 Thess 4:16's reference to the Lord's "descending with a shout"), showing how utilization of the materials previously treated furthers their interpretation. Rounding off the whole are six appendixes (Canons of Scripture that include the Apocrypha; Quotations, Allusions and Parallels to the New Testament; Parallels between New Testament Gospels and Pseudepigraphical Gospels; Jesus' Parables; and the Parables of the Rabbis; Jesus and Jewish Miracle Stories; and Messianic Claimants of the First and Second Centuries) plus three indexes (modern authors; ancient writings and writers; and ancient sources)". - Christopher T.
