| Title: The Eleazar Miracle and Solomon's Magical Wisdom in Flavius Josephus's Antiquitates Judaicae 8.42-49 Secondary Title: HThR Volume: 78 Pages: 1-25 Type: Journal Article Year: 1985 Abstract: "Die narrative Struktur der Dämonenaustreibung ist die der apologetischen Aretalogie. Dabei ist der kontextgemäße Bezug der Akklamation auf Salomo als Autorkommentar eine auffallende Besonderheit. Die Redaktion setzt eine breite Tradition ober Slaomo als Magier voraus. Die Absicht dürfte sein, die von Rom verbotene Magie in ihrer helfenden Verwendung zu legalisieren und hoffähig zu machen". - WSch.
"On the function of the miracle from the perspective of Josephus' overall political purpose, his views of miracles and magic, his portrait of Solomon, his knowledge of the Jewish legend of Solomon's magical wisdom, his immediate context for the story, and his social location as a Jewish apologist to educated Greco-Roman readers in the 1st cent. A.D.".
"The miracle story of Eleazar in Josephus' Antiquities 8:42-49 is first clarified by a formal analysis and by relating its form to other miracles in Josephus' works and other ancient writings. Then the Eleazar story is examined with reference to Josephus' sources and apologetic purpose, his view of miracle and magic, portrait of Solomon, probable knowledge of the legends of Solomon's magical wisdom elsewhere, and immediate context of the story. In this one instance Josephus may have been willing to describe the legend of Solomon, which verged on the popular and irrational but which was white magic and of growing attraction, in the context of his own rather ambiguous attitude toward history and the supernatural". - D.J.H.
