| Title: The Use of prophetes in Josephus Secondary Title: JBL Volume: 101 Pages: 419-421 Type: Journal Article Year: 1982 Abstract: "There are two passages in which Josephus, contrary to his usual practice, applies the term to post-biblical figures. // Entgegen der weitverbreiteten Auffassung, daß Josephus den Begriff propetes ausschließlich für die atl.-kanonischen Propheten reserviert, zeigt Vf., daß ""there are one or two passages in which he does apply the designation to post-biblical figures"". - R.M. // In War 6:286, Josephus used the term prophetai to designate hires stooges whose task was to infuse the populace with false hopes. Also, his manner of quoting Alexander Polyhistor's designation of Kleodemos(Malchos as ho prophetes (Ant. 1:240-241) indicates that he concurred with the accuracy of that appellation. Thus it can no longer be claimed that Josephus restricted his application of prophetes of the OT canonical prophets. - D.J.H." Keywords: History of Terms, language, style |
