Abstract: "C.'s essay analyzes Jewish (e.g., SibOr 4 and 5; 4 Ezra; 2 Baruch; Josephus) and Christian (e.g., Apostolic Fathers and early Apologists) eschatological texts for their influence on the "parting of the ways". Stressing the wide range of viewpoints reflected in the texts, C. points out two primary cautions regarding them: (1) the "Jewish" and "Christian" traditions and texts are as much divided among themselves as against each other; and (2) Messianic nationalism was a constantly recurring factor in the late first and early second centuries A.D." - Ronald D.
