Title: Der Tempel von Jerusalem von Salomo bis Herodes. Eine archäologisch-historische Studie unter Berücksichtigung des Westsemitischen Tempelbaus. 2. Band. Von Ezechiel bis Middot
Author: Busink, Theodor A.
Type: Book
Year: 1980
Abstract: "The first volume of Busink's magnum opus appeared in 1970 and dealt very full with the Solomonic temple and other early temples throughout Syria and Palestine (it was not noted in the Book List). The work is completed by this second, even lager, volume which treats the post-exilic structures and their history as well as the 'blueprints' in Ezekiel 40-42, Mishnah Middoth and the Qumran Temple Scroll (for the last he refers only to preliminary accounts of its contents). In addition there are chapters on the later history and exploration of the Temple Mount. Nabataean and Syrian temple-building and its relation to the Jewish temple and synagogues, and religious attitudes to the temple in Judaism and early Christianity. Busink's training as an architect gave him a special qualification for this mammoth task, but he also shows a comprehensive knowledge and mastery of both the original sources and secondary literature. This is sure to be the standard work on its subject for the foreseeable future. There is an extensive bibliography but it is regrettable, in view of hopes justly expressed by reviewers of the first volume, to have to report that only a brief index (of place-names) is included. This will greatly diminish the usefulness of a work of this scale, and it is to be hoped that the publisher will quickly make arraignments for the preparation and issue of adequate indexes of references, subjects and authors". - G.
