| Title: The Census and Quirinius: Luke 2,2 Secondary Title: JETS Volume: 27 Pages: 43-52 Type: Journal Article Year: 1984 Abstract: "Lk. 2:2 states that the census during which Jesus as born was the first one (prote), occurring before the more well-known census taken by Quirinius in A.D. 6-7. The first census took place in the days of Herod the Great, i.e. before April of 4 B.C". - D.J.H.
"Luke 2:2 fits well both grammatically and historically when taken to mean that the census during which Jesus was born was the census before the well-known, later census of Quirinius in A.D. 6-7. According to L.H. Feldman, N. Turner and F.F. Bruce, Lk 2:2 must be translated as follows: "This census was the first before that under the prefectureship of Quirinius in Syria". - Notes".
