| Title: Flavius Josephus, the Zealots and Yavne. Towards a rereading of "The War of the Jews" Type: Book Year: 1994 Abstract: "The English version of Flavius Josèphe, les Zélotes et Yavné (1989), this volume contends that the key to interpreting Josephus' Jewish War is to recognize the Jewishness of his discourse. It argues that a literal reading of Josephus' discourse in his Jewish War reveals that certain of his choices (e.g. rejection of the war against Rome, hatred of the Zealots) fall directly in line with the Jewish tradition represented by Rabbi Yohanan ben Zakkai and his Yavneh school. It first defines Josephus' Jewish discourse with reference to how the Jew perceives himself (historical monotheism) and how the Jew perceives others (idolatry). Then it focusses on the war: war in the Jewish ethic, the conflict of A.D. 70 (the disturbances leading up to the outbreak of hostilities), and the Jewish factions".
