Contrary to N. Hyldahl. Den aeldste kristndoms historie (1993), it is argued that Josephus did not understand John to be of priestly birth. Nor did he see him as the priestly or kingly messiah. John was an eschatological prophet preaching conversion and religious-moral renewal before the messianic salvation.
