| Title: Josefus som historiesdriver. En undersøgelse af Josefus’ fremstilling af Gauius Caligulas konflikt med jøderne i Palæstina (Bell 2, 184-203 og Ant 18, 261-309) med særligt henblik på forfatterens tend Type: Book Year: 1983 Abstract: "Opposition delivered at the public defense of the thesis of Per Bilde, Josefus som hisotieskriver (Copenhagen 1983), a study which aims at the rehabilitation of Josephus as a writer of history and of his value as a historical source. The book pays especial attention to Josephus' description of the incidence under Caligula of the erection of the statue of the emperor in the temple of Jerusalem".
"This appraisal of Bilde's published doctoral dissertation and several smaller studies by him on Josephus commends him for his balanced, erudite work, which is well grounded in the study of texts. But it questions the connection between the three major parts of the dissertation: a history of research, an in-depth study of the conflict between Gaius Caligula and the Jews in Palestine, and a discussion of Josephus as a historian. The major contribution of the book is the historical reconstruction of Caligula's attempt to erect a statue in the Jerusalem Temple in A.D. 40-42. Bilde has argued convincingly that Josephus' chronology is more reliable than that of Philo. The remaining problems can be solved on the basis of information about the sabbatical year in A.D. 40-41". - H. M. Keywords: Jewish History: Roman Era |
