Abstract: In this book, Gruen considers Roman expansion into the East from a myriad of perspectives. He considers the political and cultural motivations of the Romans, the reaction of the Greeks and the nature of the imperium that Rome came to hold over the Eastern Mediterranean by 146 BCE. He does this with precise and extensive use of our ancient sources, particularly Polybius and Livy.
