Abstract: Massiliote involvement leading up to the Second Punic War is often overlooked. Massilia's concern over Carthaginian expansion was as great or greater than Roman concern. Polybius stressed (II.31.7, 35.2) Roman fear of the Gauls, and Massilia played upon that fear to enlist Rome's aid against Carthage. Massilian propaganda played a significant role in shaping Roman policy, which led to the Second Punic War, as Massilia was able to convince the Aemilian 'faction' that keeping Carthage in check was in the faction's own self-interest.
