Abstract: Josephus used Judas the Galilean and the creation of the 'fourth philosophy' as the scapegoats to diverge the responsibility of the Jewish revolt away from himself, his Jewish counterparts, Jerusalem, and the priesthood. The rabbinic tradition also ascribed the revolt to the fourth philosophy, and therefore, the skeptical views on the fourth philosophy might not have been created by Josephus alone. Both Josephus and the rabbis showed that the revolt started because of the failure to accept a sacrifice on behalf of the Roman emperor.
