Several ambiguous Talmudic sources relevant to the event suggest that Alexander's name was only a substitute of the original name of Antiochus. The Septuagint is an important source for explaining the recognition of the high priest by the king and the reason for the Jews' suddenly expertise in astronomy. The visibility of the star Canopus may suggest the precise date that Antiochus arrived in Jerusalem. Keywords: Simeon; Antiochus III; Alexander the Great; Mishnah and Talmud; Jewish Antiquities |
