| Title: Are we amused? Small and big differences in Josephus' re-presentations of biblical female figures in the "Jewish Antiquities" 1-8 Secondary Title: Are We Amused? Humour about Women in the Biblical Worlds Pages: 90-106 Type: Book Section Year: 2003 Abstract: Brenner claims that the works of Josephus should be read for traces of humour rather than serious historical descriptions. Moreover, Josephus does not treat the characters of biblical women in a uniform way, and he sometimes minimizes and expands their roles originally depicted in the Bible. In addition, he also stereotypically views some female figures and shows biases towards women from the point of view of a Judeo-Hellenistic male. Brenner does not find this aspect amusing.
