| Title: Josephus' account of the death of James Secondary Title: Journal of Theological Studies Volume: 52.1 Pages: 1-25 Type: Journal Article Year: 2001 Abstract: AJ 20: 199-203 was the most reliable and the oldest account on the death of James. This article examines the reference to the high priest Ananus as a Sadducee, the identity of the participants and their importance in the story, the offence of James and other people, and the complaint against Ananus. Josephus uses this event as an example of the rivalry among the Jews, who pursued for prominence in Jerusalem in the period before the first Jewish Revolt. McLaren also argues that some current concerns and emphasis in scholarship have led to the misreading of some key issues in Josephus' account on the trial. |
