Josephus and Philo represented the Jews as a people who loved philosophy, as reflected from the different schools of Jewish thoughts and the Jewish discussions on the Sabbath. The Book of Acts emphasized that Paul defended himself like a philosopher when he was on trial. The models that philosophers defended themselves with free and open speech before tyrants helped constructing a concept of Jewish and Christian martyrdom.
