| Title: Not Hellenes but Philistines? The Maccabees and Josephus defining the "Other" Secondary Title: Journal of Jewish Studies Volume: 53,2 Pages: 246-263 Type: Journal Article Year: 2002 Abstract: The article examines the texts of books 1-4 Maccabees and raises the question of how the Philistine opponents to Israel during the days of the Judges, Saul, and David shape the reading of the Maccabean campaign. The article compares the uses of 'foreigners' and 'Philistines' in the literatures of the Second Temple period, 'foreigners' in Josephus, as well as 'Philistines' and 'Palestine' in Josephus and beyond. The article argues that the books of Maccabees did not present other non-Jewish groups primarily in Greek dress. Their opponents were not the Hellenes but the Philistines. Keywords: Maccabees; Hellenism; Philistines; Josephus Flavius |
