| Title: The Torah between Athens and Jerusalem; Jewish difference in antiquity Secondary Title: Ancient Judaism in Its Hellenistic Context. Pages: 113-129 Type: Book Section Year: 2005 Abstract: Jews succeeded in retaining their identity when they encountered Hellenism. The Jews could adapt to the Greek culture in a variety of ways, partly due to the Torah's narrative nature and emphasis on laws. Jewish literatures, including the Jubilees and the Temple Scrolls, upheld the importance of the Torah. The Torah also enabled Philo and Josephus to incorporate Greek ideas into Jewish understandings. |
