| Title: Why did Josephus name the chariot-racing facility at Caesarea "amphitheater"? Secondary Title: Scripta Classica Israelica Volume: 23 Pages: 63-67 Type: Journal Article Year: 2004 Abstract: In AJ 15:341 and BJ 1:415, Josephus claimed that one of the public entertainment facilities in Caesarea Maritima was an 'amphitheatre'. Porath points out that Josephus did not make a mistake or miscall a Roman circus hippodrome. Instead, Josephus' use of the term reflected that the Greek terminology for the Roman amphitheatre was not yet standardized. He thus used the term to describe a structure resembling some features with a hippodrome but functioning in significantly different ways.
