Abstract: There is not sufficient evidence to prove that the Essenes participated in the Hellenistic worship of the sun. The groups' praying to the sun might have implied significant ideological differences between this group and the priestly class in Jerusalem. The Essenes might have followed the solar-sabbatical calendar rather than the lunar one. When the Essenes prayed towards the direction of the sun, their back would have faced the moon and the Temple in Jerusalem.
