| Title: The "Yannai Line" (BJ I, 99-100; AJ XIII, 390-91); reality or fiction? Secondary Title: Palestine Exploration Quarterly Volume: 135,2 Pages: 108-123 Type: Journal Article Year: 2003 Abstract: J Kaplan identified the archaeological remains in Tel Aviv and Bene Braq as parts of Alexander Jannaeus' defensive line, which was mentioned in BJ 1:99-100 and AJ 13:390-391, against Antiochus XII Dionysus. But the archaeological remains do not reflect any military characteristics, and they might have been civilian structures for agricultural purposes. Josephus' report should not be regarded as entirely reliable, and the term 'Yanni line' should not be investigated anymore in future research. Keywords: Josephus Flavius; Alexander Jannaeus; Tel-Aviv; archaeology |
