| Title: Josephus' (real) portraits of Deborah and Gideon; a reading of "Antiquities" 5.198-232 Secondary Title: Journal for the Study of Judaism in the Persian, Hellenistic and Roman Period Volume: 31,3 Pages: 247-274 Type: Journal Article Year: 2000 Abstract: The article critically analyzes L H Feldman's studies on Josephus' portraits on Deborah and Gideon. It criticizes Feldman's comparative and reduction approach, and argues that a careful reading of Josephus' accounts does not reflect the conclusions made by Feldman. Little evidence is there to suggest that Josephus diminished the role of Deborah or overemphasized the virtues of Gideon. Keywords: Judges; Deborah; Gideon; Jewish Antiquities |
