| Title: Jewish history, Catholic argument; Thomas Lodge's "Workes of Jospehus" as a Catholic text Secondary Title: Sixteenth Century Journal Volume: 34,1 Pages: 993-1010 Type: Journal Article Year: 2003 Abstract: Thomas Lodge was an unusual figure among modern English writers who showed concern with Jewish religious and historical texts. English theologians always used the Jewish scholarship to support their Protestant arguments, but Lodge's 'The Famous and Memorable Works of Josephus' in 1602 used the works of Josephus to defend the Catholic understandings about Christian history and theology. An examination of Lodge's translation of Josephus also indicates what kind of Catholic works could be legally published in early modern England.
